The Macalester College Library subscribes to many databases, and some include the full text of materials and some do not - they only include citations. MacLinks is a tool used to connect resources found in one database to another.
You will learn how to use MacLinks to find the full text of articles indexed but not included in the database, Academic Search Premier. If you have a citation already and want to find out if a journal or article can be found in full text in one of our subscription databases, please see our Finding Journals tutorial.
Use the arrows below to navigate sequentially through the tutorial or use the Contents button above to skip between sections.
Where to Find MacLinks
The MacLinks button appears in most library databases.
For this tutorial we are using Academic Search Premier. Please click on the link to the database found here.
Now we need to search for something in order to see results that include the MacLinks button. Please type (or copy/paste) the words COLLEGE STUDENTS SLEEPING CUSTOMS into the search box at the top of the page and click SEARCH.
When to use MacLinks
You will see in these search results in Academic Search Premier some of the citations include the full text of the article.
The MacLinks button does not appear in these cases because you have immediate access the article.
Clicking on the MacLinks button for the article, 'COLLEGE RESIDENTIAL SLEEP ENVIRONMENT', will show you what online resource subscribed to by Macalester will allow you to access this article.
Click on the button now, a new window will open. You should see that you have access to this article in 'Psychological Reports' from Ammons Scientific. You can click on 'View Full Text' to get to the article. When done please close the new window and return to this tutorial.
If we did not have access to this article in any of our print or online collections you could request a copy of it through our Interlibrary Loan service. To do this go to the Request section of the MacLinks menu and click on the 'Request Through Interlibrary Loan' button. You will then be prompted to login to our Interlibrary Loan system with your Macalester username and password.
Go to the next page of the tutorial to review.
